Choose noise-canceling headphones by the noise you need to reduce and the way you will wear them. “Strong ANC” is not a complete buying criterion: a travel headphone can fail as an office headset if its microphone is poor, and an impressive earbud can become unusable if its tips do not seal your ears.

How ANC works in practical terms
Active noise cancellation uses microphones, signal processing, and the headphone drivers to reduce parts of the sound reaching your ear. It works together with passive isolation from earcups or ear tips.
Steady, predictable sounds such as engine rumble and ventilation are generally easier to reduce electronically. Irregular voices, clattering dishes, keyboard impacts, and sudden warnings are harder. That is why a single marketing phrase such as “blocks all distractions” is not useful evidence.
When reading an independent test, look for separate results for:
- Low-frequency transport or engine noise.
- Midrange office and speech noise.
- Higher-frequency hiss and clatter.
- Wind interaction with ANC microphones.
- Passive isolation with ANC disabled.
RTINGS publishes its noise-isolation methodology, which is useful because products can be compared under the same process. One lab is still one methodology; fit on your head can differ from a fixture.
ANC is not automatically hearing protection
The previous version of this guide suggested consumer ANC headphones could protect hearing in loud environments. That was too broad.
CDC/NIOSH states that active noise cancellation should not be considered hearing protection unless the product is labeled with a Noise Reduction Rating. OSHA likewise advises against replacing tested hearing-protection devices with ordinary consumer ANC headphones.
Use NIOSH hearing-protection guidance for occupational or hazardous noise. Consumer headphones are for listening and comfort unless the product is specifically rated for protection.
Choose the form factor
Over-ear
Over-ear headphones surround the ear and can combine physical seal with ANC. They are the natural starting point for flights, long office sessions, and buyers who dislike in-ear tips.
Check heat buildup, headband pressure, cushion depth, glasses seal, case volume, and whether the headband folds. Weight alone does not predict comfort.
In-ear earbuds
Earbuds can provide strong isolation in a small package, but only when the tips seal properly. Try every supplied size and use the app’s fit test when available. A loose seal can change both bass response and ANC.

Open-ear headphones
Open-ear models leave the canal uncovered. They are useful when awareness and the absence of an in-ear seal matter more than isolation. They cannot create the same passive barrier as a sealed earbud or over-ear cup, so loud environments may encourage unsafe volume increases.
On-ear
On-ear headphones press against the outer ear. They can be compact, but pressure and weaker passive isolation are common compromises. Try them before assuming the smaller form is comfortable for a full workday.
Comfort is a test, not a specification
Evaluate fit for at least the length of your normal session while you are still inside the return window. Check:
- Pressure on the crown of the head.
- Clamp around glasses or temples.
- Ear contact with the driver cover.
- Heat and moisture after an hour.
- Whether jaw movement breaks the seal.
- Whether an earbud loosens during walking.
A model that measures well but causes pain is the wrong model for you.
Microphone quality needs separate evidence
ANC microphones and call microphones may share hardware, but good listening isolation does not guarantee good outgoing speech. Look for recordings in at least two conditions: a quiet room and a repeatable noisy environment.
Also check:
- Whether the headset can mute calls from an on-device control.
- Whether you hear your own voice through sidetone.
- Whether the microphone works over the analog cable or only over Bluetooth.
- Whether call quality changes between a phone and computer.
- Whether wind triggers aggressive voice filtering.

Codecs: compatibility before labels
SBC and AAC are widely used. LDAC and aptX Adaptive can offer different bitrate or latency strategies on compatible devices. Bluetooth LE Audio introduces LC3, which the Bluetooth SIG describes as a more efficient codec designed to balance quality and power use.
Before paying for a codec:
- Confirm your phone, computer, and headphones support the same codec.
- Check whether multipoint disables the preferred codec.
- Check whether the codec increases latency for video or games.
- Remember that tuning and fit can matter more than the codec label.
The claim that “Hi-Res only matters when wired” is too absolute. High-bitrate wireless formats exist, but a Hi-Res logo still does not prove that one headphone sounds better than another.
Wired playback and USB-C traps
A USB-C charging port does not imply USB audio. Some headphones charge only; some accept digital audio; some can play over analog cable while powered off; others require battery power even when wired.
Verify four separate behaviors:

Battery claims: compare like with like
Battery tables often mix ANC on/off, spatial audio on/off, earbud-only runtime, and total case capacity. Compare the mode you will actually use.
For travel, single-charge runtime and quick-charge behavior matter. For earbuds, the case total matters only if you can stop to recharge. Volume, codec, calls, temperature, battery age, and processing modes all change real runtime.
There is no defensible rule that anything above 30 hours is “overkill.” A longer rating may be useful for multi-day travel or battery aging; it should simply be weighed against size, weight, and charging access.
What to ignore or verify
- Driver diameter: does not predict overall sound quality by itself.
- Microphone count: does not prove better ANC or calls across brands.
- “Studio quality”: requires supporting measurements and a defined meaning.
- Spatial-audio branding: check compatible services and whether you enjoy the effect.
- Fixed price tiers: compare current checkout prices because mature headphones move between tiers.
- One overall score: inspect the underlying tests that match your environment.
